The healthiest families are not conflict free.

Conflict is part of growing up and part of parenting. As your adolescent starts to stretch, test boundaries, and find their voice, disagreements aren’t just inevitable, they’re necessary. Conflict means they care. It means they’re forming values, learning to stand firm in who they are, and figuring out how to be in relationship with others.

Our goal isn’t to eliminate conflict, it’s to teach them (and ourselves) that conflict isn’t fatal. It’s part of caring deeply about things, including ourselves and the people around us. When handled well, conflict becomes a training ground for skills like dignity, emotional regulation, and problem-solving, skills they’ll need for a lifetime of healthy relationships.

Conflict is inevitable. Disconnection isn’t. With the right tools, you can meet these moments with clarity, compassion, and a steady hand while teaching your adolescent how to do the same.
